The Lion King
Director: Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers
Released: October 1994
Blue stars: 5/5
Ok, so I had to do the lion king. It's one of my top three favourite movies, so I just had to. (My top three being: The lion king, Catch me if you can, and La La Land... disclaimer, this list is always changing so will probably change again in about an hour) I love Disney films, as long as it has that castle logo appear on the screen before the film, chances are I'm gonna love it. The lion king though it my all-time favourite Disney film, and no matter how many good ones they bring out, I’m afraid it's a non-mover. I really shouldn't have to even give you a quick content review, everyone should have seen it, but I'm going to because that's the structure and I bet there is at least one uncultured swine (toy story reference) among you. A young lion is born and is next in line for the throne, Simba can’t wait to be king but scar (current kings brother) has other plans. In a freak accident (planned by scar) the king dies and the thrown is empty, Scar encourages Simba to run away. Simba ends up in a tropical paradise where he is raised by a warthog and a meerkat (that there folks is Oscar worthy writing) everything is hakuna matata (you better watch the film if you wanna know what that means) until Simba’s childhood friend turns up, resulting in Simba going back to pride rock to face his demons, but you should already know that, unless you are the spawn of Satan.
As a Disney film it's gotta have a killer soundtrack, and let me just say the music does not disappoint. The absolute banger which is 'can't wait to be King' is as I said is an absolute banger. It is the catchiest tune you will hear for the next hundred years, and I can guarantee you will be singing it wherever you go. Also, as we are talking about music I can't not mention hakuna Matata, because come on that one’s great. Also, it's takes away from the emotional Trauma of Mufasa's death (yeah, he dies, but I hope not one of you are surprised as you have ALL watched the film, ‘never seen the lion king’ is not a phrase that exists). The video that goes along with this song as well is one of my favourite parts of the film. my favourite little scene is when they are walking over the log and it shows Simba growing up. it makes me sad because he grew up so quickly and has spent all that time living with the fake knowledge that it was his fault his father died. I also just love the animation in that bit and think it was really cool.
you didn't come all the way here for me not to talk about the emotional pit of sadness that is Mufasa's death and if you came here hoping I wouldn't talk about it, well, I'm sorry this issue must be noted. I personally love scar as a villain, and I always think villains really must be effortlessly cool. I don't wanna see some brute of a lion who only has strength and yells every sentence. No, my villains must be sly, fake friendly, and most of the time just wow you with their underhand comments. Scar is basically the greatest villain ever, and the fact that he kills his own brother by throwing him into a herd of wilder beast, in a sick way is ingenious. now I'm not gonna hide that fact that I cried like a little baby when Simba was trying to get his dad to 'wake up’…I mean who didn't, and I hated scar at that moment when he emerged from the fog. However, for some weird reason I find the bit where Mufasa drops Simba then he appears out of nowhere to grab Simba one of the saddest bits because it's the length a parent will go for their children *wipes away tear, as the thought of me being a annoying child and my parents not giving me up for adoption floats around my brain*, but yeah, Scar is a awesome Disney villain…Onto the conclusion.
To conclude Hamlet with lions is the best idea ever. Well done Disney, and I know its not just mine but everyone’s favourite Disney film, even if you claim to hate it, I know you’re lying! What’s not to love, great music numbers, great characters, emotional trauma…. It has everything!!!
The Lion King gets 5/5 blue stars! (but of course, its gonna get that, its in my top favourite three films, it doesn’t make that list if it’s bad)
